DESCRIPTION: First Archbishop of Manila, native of Burgos , Spain . Became a provincial and preacher to King Philip II. Consecrated archbishop in Nueva España ( Mexico ) in 1596. Took possession of the See of Manila on May 28, 1598 . Erected the Metropolitan Cathedral with three suffragans: Cebu , Nueva Caceres, and Nueva Segovia by virtue of the Bull of Pope Clement VIII on August 14, 1595 . Died of dysentery on August 14, 1598 . Was buried in the cathedral.
