TITLE: Domingo de Salazar, O.P.

DESCRIPTION: First Bishop of Manila, born in Rioja , Spain in 1512. Entered the Dominican Order at Salamanca and worked for 40 years as a missionary in Nueva España ( Mexico ). Consecrated bishop in Madrid in 1579. Arrived in Manila in March 1581. Erected the Manila Cathedral on December 21, 1581 by virtue of the Bull of Pope Gregory XIII as suffragan of Mexico . Defended the natives against abusive encomenderos.
