Church to mark Sin’s death anniversary The Archdiocese of Manila has announced that they would commemorate the third death anniversary ofJaime Cardinal Sin with a concelebrated Mass at the Manila Cathedral on June 21. Manila archdiocese’s vice chancellor, Fr. Isidro Marinay said that the 7:30 a.m. Mass will be presided by Sin’s successor Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales. Sin retired as the archbishop of Manila on Sept. 15, 2003 after he reached the age of retirement. He died at the age of 76 on June 21, 2005. He is best remembered for being a prime mover in two EDSA revolutions. Sin, along with former Presidents Corazon Sin again intervened in 2001 and helped oust President Joseph Estrada and installed President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. He was born in New Washington in Aklan to Juan Sin and Maxima Lachica. He was officially installed as Archbishop of Manila at the Manila Cathedral on March 19, 1974. On May 24, 1976, Pope Paul VI summoned Sin to the Holy See to join the College of Cardinals. He was regarded as the youngest member of the College until 1983. Sin served as CBCP president for two terms, from 1977 to 1981. Sin was decorated three times by the Philippine government. The first was by President Aquino, who conferred on him the Philippine Legion of Honor, rank of Chief Commander; the second, by President Estrada, who conferred on him the Order of Sikatuna, rank of Rajah; the final time was shortly after his retirement, when President Arroyo conferred on him the Order of Lakandula, rank of Bayani (Grand Cross).
